China is Australia’s largest trading partner, and Australia is Taiwan’s third largest trading partner. Taiwan’s de facto ambassador in Australia said, “The opposition from China is not unexpected. China will use every way to avoid Taiwan participating in any international organisations.” In order for a country to join the trade pact, all members must agree. China also wants to join the pact, as they emphasized their strong trade with Australia, but they didn’t mention the economic sanctions imposed by Beijing on Australia. Australian businesses have been impacted because of China’s boycotts of their products. The regional trade group has received applications from both China and Taiwan to join, which creates tension because China opposes Taiwan’s application, and Taiwan accuses China of “bullying”.

With China and Taiwan both trying to join the pact, this can cause rising tensions. China does not want Taiwan to join any international organizations, which would make it hard for Taiwan to join because members in the pact may not let Taiwan join in fear of upsetting China. This also puts Australia in a difficult place because they are better trading partners with China, but Taiwan qualifies to join, and they could benefit from increased trade with Taiwan. China has affected Australia’s economy and businesses with the economic sanctions, so Australia is probably not fond of the idea of bringing in China. If they bring Taiwan in, China could react very poorly, which would cause tension in the region. This could also mean that if Taiwan is let in, they would have to let China in the pact as well.

CPTPP is an intergovernmental organization with the benefit of free trade among the members. The choice that the members of the trade pact make on whether to let in Taiwan can be viewed from different levels of analysis. On the regional level, they may choose not to include Taiwan because of fear of making China mad which can affect the region and the countries in the pact. On the domestic level, they may want to let Taiwan in because it can improve their economies as they can benefit from more trade. There are many perspectives/ factors that can impact an event. Lastly, Taiwan is an unrecognized state because China does not recognize them.

Link to article:https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/taiwan-asks-australia-support-regional-trade-bid-2021-10-12/ Taiwan wants to join the CPTPP pan-pacific trade pact and is asking for Australia’s support, but China opposes this.
