Under the Biden administration these bans will continue and be revised, with ten new companies added to the list in June 2021. Although along with other restrictions there have been measures taken to try and combat China’s growing military-industrial complex, some U.S. officials have made complaints that the current administration has not taken large enough steps against China arguing that no further companies have been added to the ban since June when it was decided the ban would be revised and continued.

This is significant because the U.S. is trying to combat China’s growing influence across the globe and their growing military power through economic means. In the past few decades China has become a rising superpower both economically and militarily. Because of this the U.S. implemented the bans on investment in certain Chinese companies to try and decrease the amount of funding they have which could be used for research and technological development for the Chinese military or which could help China grow economically. This is because the U.S. is attempting to maintain their dominance on the world stage and sees China as the greatest threat to them and their allies.

This article is relevant to this class because the United States is currently the main power in the current unipolar system, however China is quickly becoming more and more powerful and is already challenging the United States in some fields militarily and economically. The United States is attempting to maintain the current unipolar system through investment bans and other restrictions on certain Chinese companies that it views as aiding the Chinese military with technological development. Aside from economic measures the United States is also strengthening its relationships with countries in South-East Asia in an attempt to strengthen their military presence and have a more effective counter to China in the region.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/business/us-extends-ban-securities-investments-companies-linked-china-military-2021-11-09/ In November 2020 the Trump administration introduced bans on U.S. investments in Chinese companies that have ties with the Chinese military.
