China has increased their border protection because they currently have multiple border areas which have been volatile recently with the standoff on their southern border with India as well as the threat of Islamist extremists crossing the Chinese-Afghan border to try and meet with the Uyghur muslims following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. The increased border security and protection has also been put in place as a means of protection against COVID 19 after a surge in cases in the southern provinces was greatly impacted by illegal border crossings from Vietnam and Myanmar.

This is a significant development because the increased border security will almost certainly increase the already high tensions with India regarding border disputes. China and India have previously fought a war over border disputes in 1962 and multiple skirmishes have occurred since the beginning of 2020. A possible buildup of military hardware and an increased military presence on this border could lead to a local arms race or even the possibility of a war. The other important aspect of this is that China has stated that they are worried about an infiltration Islamist extremists from the Taliban, which it was previously thought were working with China. However, with China’s recent cooperation with Tajikistan in building and funding military bases in the Afghan-Tajik border areas as well as the new Chinese law, this seems to be unlikely.

This article is a great example of international relations because China believes that their sovereignty has been breached or is threatened enough to increase their border security in an attempt to stabilize their borders. However, this could be seen as a threat especially to India who shares multiple long, disputed borders with China. China is also trying to prevent Islamist extremists from linking up with the Uyghur muslims in Western China. If extremists were able to reach the Uyghur muslims they may be able to aid the Uyghurs in more actively starting their independence movement to form East Turkestan.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-strengthens-land-border-protection-with-new-law-2021-10-24/ In response to a number of tense situations on their borders, including the standoff between Indian and Chinese troops along disputed border areas since early 2020, China passed a law which will strengthen the protection of their borders which will take effect on January first.
