This took place at the ASEAN conference, also known as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Also at this meeting, the Philippines criticized recent provocative actions from China in the South China Sea. The South China Sea and Chinas actions concerning it have been a large subject of conflict in the past years. This is because China has claimed virtually all of the South China Sea, which opposes the claims of several other ASEAN countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Phillipines.

Analysis: I think that actions hold more power than words, and in this case, China needs to take actions like not claiming the entire South China Sea, instead of just promising “not to seek dominance”. Jinping’s statement rings rather hollow during the current time period. If China were to back down on their claims or seek to actually help other smaller countries, there statement would actually create change and make some meaningful differences. China has a history of hollow claims like this that don’t stand alongside any real action. I believe that the Phillipines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Vietnam all have rightful claims on the South China sea that deserve to be taken into consideration.

How does this relate to IR: This has a lot to do with geopolitics, which is the use of geography as an element of power. Because China is using this geographical location to likely increase their military power and control trade routes, it shows that geopolitics are a key factor in the conflict over the South China sea. Many countries are struggling to have some control of this location and therefore, more power. This clearly has a lot of affect on the foreign policy of countries in the region, that is often expressed in these ASEAN conferences.

Link to article: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-11-23/xi-jinping-china-will-not-seek-dominance-over-south-east-asia/100641786 Summary: Amid ongoing conflict about the South China sea, president Xi Jinping said he will not seek dominance over Southeast Asia or bully its smaller neighbors.
