Summary: The Pentagon has announced that they will focus on building bases in Guam and Australia to prepare the US military to counter China. A senior defense official provided some details of the review that took place in the Pentagon to discuss China and how to counter them. The defense official says that in the meeting they discussed how the Indo-Pacific region as a whole was a major focus. This fact was supported by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s emphasis on “China as the pacing Challenge” for the department. The Biden administration has made countering China its main foreign policy priority. This is in response to the rising tensions between America and China particularly over the issue of Taiwan. To fully prepare for China the Department has decided to enhance infrastructure in Guam and Australia. This includes increasing aircraft in Australia and having troops more broadly over the Indo-Pacific region. They also want to reduce the number of troops and equipment in other areas of the world “to enable improved warfighting readiness and increased activities” in the Indo-Pacific.

Analysis: America has recognized China as a threat in the past but because of America’s involvement in the Middle East they had bigger things to worry about than China at those times. Now with America leaving the Middle East they have shifted their attention to China. China in the recent months has been getting more and more aggressive with Taiwan, an ally of America, and this concerns not only America but America’s allies in the Indo-Pacific region which includes but is not limited to Australia and Japan. China has a large military and if we were to meet them in battle over Taiwan or any other country in that region it would be in an area China is familiar with. This gives China a slight advantage. Already this advantage on top of their extensive resources has scared America enough to start getting more troops and equipment to that area of the world. Hopefully America’s move will hold China back and prevent any conflicts from breaking out. But only time will tell how China and America will settle this issue over Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region as a whole.

How this relates to class: This relates greatly to realist theory in the way that both China and America are only acting in their own self interest right now. China wants control of Taiwan and ideally the entire South China Sea and they want America out of that region. America on the other hand one wants the exact opposite. They want to contain China. They want Taiwan to be its own democratically ruled country they also want to keep their control over that region.
