Taiwan\u2019s ministers have said that the Biden administration including them on the list shows that Taiwan has upheld democratic values and human rights. This all comes after an increase in tensions between China and Taiwan with China frequently violating Taiwanese airspace and conducting naval exercises near Taiwan. China also said that they oppose the move to include Taiwan in the democracy summit claiming that the United States merely uses democracy to advance their geopolitical goals and oppress countries that the United States does not agree with.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a significant development because recently China has been increasing pressure on Taiwan militarily and politically with frequent violations of their airspace and pressuring countries to cut ties with Taiwan. The inclusion of Taiwan in the democracy summit shows that they still have support from other members of the international community and that many countries who are allied with Taiwan will not back down or cut ties with Taiwan in the face of Chinese aggression. This could be enough of a deterrent to keep the Chinese from invading and help to maintain the status quo between China and Taiwan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article relates to class because Taiwan is a non recognized state that has partial international recognition and controls their own internal and foreign affairs.
