Richardson had previously stated that his focus in the meeting would be on humanitarian issues and during the meeting the main topics discussed were related to the current COVID-19 situation in Myanmar. This included issues such as opening schools, treatments and whether or not Myanmar could receive medical supplies and vaccines from the United States. This meeting also comes after Myanmar was excluded from the Southeast Aisan regional summit, a decision which was supported by President Biden.

This is an important development because the military junta in Myanmar had previously been in political isolation following their coup in early February which put them in power. A significant humanitarian crisis has also developed with many of the junta’s political opponents being imprisoned and protests being violently put down. Pro-democracy insurgencies and resistance groups have appeared in many parts of the country with the fighting worsening the crisis. While the meetings between Richardson and the junta leader are only about possible humanitarian aid, any relations and meetings with other countries could be seen as the junta gaining recognition or acceptance of their rule over Myanmar by other countries especially if they are in negotiations with a major power like the United States.

This article relates to class because Myanmar previously had a democratically elected government which was overthrown in a military coup which has held power since February. Following this the junta was barred from international summits and IGOs with little to no diplomatic relations with other countries. The junta government is currently unrecognized on the international level, however, any form of negotiations or cooperation with other countries could be seen as a step towards the junta being accepted as the ruling power in Myanmar despite there still being a strong presence of pro-democracy protests and rebel groups in the country.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/us-former-diplomat-richardson-meets-myanmar-junta-chief-2021-11-02/ Former U.S. diplomat Bill Richardson met with Min Aung Hlaing, the junta leader in Myanmar who has mostly been in diplomatic isolation since the coup in February.
