The Rohingya are a muslim minority group in Myanmar and other countries in Southeast Asia. In Myanmar Rohingya people are not considered citizens and have limited access to healthcare and other services. They have also been the targets of mass killings and other atrocities which the government of Myanmar denies. The history of persecution and oppression of the Rohingya has led to many trying to find their way out of Myanmar with as many as 730,000 fleeing to Bangladesh in 2017.

This incident is important because the Rohingya had already faced oppression in Myanmar by the military and government but the military led coup the overall situation in the country has greatly deteriorated as a whole which also led to harsher crackdowns on the Rohingya people by the military. These incidents have continued to occur despite protests from the U.N. and the international community, however, the same happened with the previous government which also did not help to lessen the oppression. With the new junta in power these complaints are likely to have even less effect on the situation.

This article relates to this class because the Rohingya are a stateless nation spread throughout several countries in Southeast Asia and are frequently found fleeing to other countries like Bangladesh to avoid persecution. They have regularly faced mass killings and other atrocities with the U.N. and other IGOs putting pressure on Myanmar and other countries to stop the atrocities committed against the Rohingya, generally with little or no effect.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/myanmar-seizes-boat-carrying-228-rohingya-state-tv-2021-11-29/ Myanmar has seized a boat that was carrying more than 200 Rohingya who were attempting to flee the country.
