This missile system was bought from their neighbor India and is a part of a 5.85 billion dollar program to modernize their military. The Philippines has hada severely obsolete military, with ships from WWII in addition to helicopters from the vietnam war. Despite the rehaul of its military forces it’s one of the most poorly equipped in Asia and pales in comparison to China. The new deal negotiated between India and the Philippines is that they will deliver three missile batteries as well as train crews on operating the weapons. The Company BrahMos is a joint venture between India and Russia. This group has developed a new cruise missile which India claims to be the fastest in the world. The Philippines are acquiring these weapons as a deterrent over EEZ claims in the south china sea.

My take on the article is that China is scarring all the other countries in the south china sea. This powerhouse of a country has caused neighboring countries to arm themselves with weapons in a worse case scenario. With China arming up to possibly take Taiwan the Philippines has taken notice and has started to rehaul its forces. With many counties losing out on vital resources that are essential to their economy counter such as the Philippines have had enough. The outright bullying of EEZ zones has resorted to military deterrence. Another point worth mentioning is Russia’s joint venture with india. This is particularly interesting because it seems like they are working on two sides. The Russians are almost making a plan b just in case relations implode with China and a possible clash of power arises. Russia is seeming to possibly be sneaking in and securing this just in case.

This topic relates to the class of showing different ways countries have displayed geopolitics. For China in this case they have used organic theory. China has experienced rapid growth in all sectors and is looking to expand so it doesn’t reach its carrying capacity and survive. In order to achieve this it needs a lot of resources which it’s getting from the south china sea. This policy that China has seemed to use has put a lot of pressure on other countries in that region. As this tension rises it could lead to a shattering belt. Where there is so much territorial dispute that that region can’t be calmed even with use of force and for the foreseeable future be unstable.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/1/15/philippines-to-acquire-missile-system-from-india-for-375-mln The Philippines have recently secured a 375 million dollar deal to buy anti-ship missile systems.
