China has been claiming it is infringement from Indonesia on their territorial water. China’s naval vessels have been close to Indonesian naval vessels multiple times on patrols of the area, seeing Indonesia continually drilling in the territory for natural gas and oil. Both countries have been at standoffs over the territory for the past year. The territory is important for natural resources in a strategically important area in Asia.

This has major implications for both countries, mainly because oil and natural gas is a precious resource that is also a major moneymaker. Both countries want control of it for usage of it for their own people, to be less dependent on it from foreign exporters of natural gas and oil, and to be able to make money exporting it elsewhere to countries who depend on it being imported to them. This has happened since China has really invested in the South China Sea the past couple of years. The oil and natural gas is the main reason for their interest and threats as some countries see it. China has had dispute and even small conflicts with multiple countries now over the territory. The issue is that the South China Sea is the 3rd most traveled maritime trade route globally. Potential crossing of territory is almost inevitable, and China’s response is total control of the Sea.

This article relates to the topic of China’s desire to control the South China Sea. China’s main desire for controlling it is the oil and natural gas, which is also an interest for Indonesia. Indonesia drilling for the resources is considered a territorial violation according to China, while Indonesia claims that it is legal and is being done in retaliation of protests against military exercises in the area between Indonesia and the U.S. China’s interest is something to watch and see what countries that border the Sea will do with China’s current behavior and national interest.

https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/International-relations/South-China-Sea/China-tells-Indonesia-to-stop-drilling-off-South-China-Sea-islands China has told Indonesia repeatedly to stop drilling for natural gas and oil off the coast of small islands in the South China Sea.
