This meeting also took place to disscuss reviving a 2015 deal (JCPOA) between major powers and Iran, which the US withdrew from under the Trump administration in 2018. The deal would have Iran limit uranium enrichment progress (making it more difficult to advance its nuclear weapons) & in return the international sanctions would be lifted allowing Iran to expand its oil sales internationally. However former President Trump withdrew from the deal (claiming not enough was being done on Iran’s side to curb nuclear efforts) while increasing sanctions on Iran (tanking its economy), because of this Ian has increased and improved its stockpiles of uranium. During the meeting the two powers agreed on a 25 year cooperation deal!!!! ahhhh

This article is very important because it stresses the value powers place on the Middle East because of its natural resources. Throughout US history relations with Iran have always been in somewhat of a rocky state, under different US President administrations sanctions on Iran have either been really strict or slightly more mild. (From former President Obama’s direct contact with Iranian President to former President Trump calling Iran a “nation of terror” and designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard (a branch of the Iranian army)—a foreign terrorist organization (FTO).) It is important to realize both sides of of the sanctions. With lose sanctions would we the United States really want to risk Iran increasing its Uranium enrichment for a better relation with Iran? Or will strict sanctions better protect our country and give us Security knowing Iran will suffer a bad economy from them? Or will Iran continue to increase uranium enrichment regardless of the sanctions the US imposes making strict sanctions useless and more destructive??? Depending on the steps taken by Washington currently the US has some tough decisions to make, facing various consequences based on the path taken to slow uranium enrichment.

This article relates back to ideas discussed in class about the fluidity of alliances. This states that relationships with another state are due to self interest and convenience rather than social reasons, but if the world consists of humans who are greedy and selfish and states act like humans then this can explain how forer US administrations, like the Trump administration, believed stricter sanctions placed on Iran was most effective.

Link to Article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/1/15/china-reaffirms-opposition-to-u-s-sanctions-on-iran Foreign Chinese Minister Wang Yi and an Iranian counterpart hold a meeting where they blame the US for continuing diplomatic standstill.
