This bill would ban defense contractors from using chinese produced rare earth metals. The bill is hoping to counter China’s dominance in the sector. It also aims in the hope that the pentagon will help fund and build a stockpile of these 17 rare earth metals to use. This also hopes to revitalize and rebuild US production and processing plants/mines for these metals. The US pioneered th imdusrrty back in WWII but has lost control to China in the past 30 years. There is only one Rare earth metal mine in the US and this comes with cancer that processing and mining is very toxic to the environment. There are 17 rare earth metals that are vital in most every electronic and military device. From magnets, EV’s, misslie, jets, etc. These 17 metals are critical pieces to how the US operates.

My take on the article is that the US is trying to steer away from reliance on China. As China becomes more of a threat to the US, relying on China for almost all trade is a dangerous move. If an all out war were to happen then china would cut us off our import supply basically shutting the majority of the US market down. Especially with the whole rare earth metal supply being dominated by China it would cripple the US economy and military. The decision to reduce demand on these vital metals from one source is a wise decision as a backup if anything were to happen. This also might be the first of many more bills to come as the Us is trying to rebuild its domestic economy and production.

This topic relates to class with the idea of Political structures and theory. China has risen through the ranks from a rising power all the way to a global power with the US. With China ruling East asian realm entirely with very little competition its has clashed with the Us controlled martatime realm. These two have been vying for top position especially on economic hegemony. If one can rule the largest most powerful economy then they win. These two states are also very interconnected through liberal policy especially under the idea of complex interdependence. As tensions have risen the US is more and more trying to rely less on chain is relations were to go south.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/exclusive-us-bill-would-block-defense-contractors-using-chinese-rare-earths-2022-01-14/ Recently a new bill has been passed into the US senate.
