The launch came following the sailing of two U.S. Navy aircraft carriers along with other equipment, including a pair of amphibious assault ships, alongside allies in the Philippine Sea. It is not clear what caused the provocation but it is suspected that the U.S. actions are what caused it, as China did something similar in early October during U.S. Navy operations. Taiwan issued radio warnings and sent combat planes to deter the Chinese aircraft, while air defense missile systems were deployed to keep watch over the planes, Taiwan\u2019s Ministry of National Defense said in a statement issued late on Sunday. Beijing has been increasing its presence near Taiwan in recent years and has additionally been sending dozens of planes towards Taiwan’s defense zone, coinciding with President Xi Jinping advocating for Taiwan to be brought into China as part of some sort of “peaceful reunification.” In addition, the U.S. military activities in the area coincide with the delivery of aid to Ukraine, including ammunition, and weapons.
This quarrel is important to both China and the United States, as China wants to gain more territory so they can have unrestricted access to the Pacific Ocean. As of this moment, it is suspected that the United States wants to hold on to this piece of territory as an ally due to the current ability for the US to put a stranglehold on the Chinese shipping routes if need be. This would obviously be the worst case scenario but it is a card that the US government still wants to hold, and if Taiwan falls, they would lose this ace. As for Taiwan they are stuck between a rock and a hard place as they really would not stand a chance against a Chinese invasion and they need to hope that the US will back them if this turns into a man on man conflict.
This relates to what we are discussing in class as we have previously discussed the geopolitics of the region and why both countries find it so valuable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/china-flies-dozens-warplanes-near-taiwan China launched 39 aircraft, mostly fighter jets, near Taiwan Sunday, the single largest show of force in months.
