The government officials present at the meetings state that they were working “very closely” to reach a consensus as to their response to. The meeting comes in context with North Korea launching a series of missiles on the first of the new year. One of the missiles has the capability of reaching the U.S. territory of Guam, which is the farthest that any North Korean test missile has been able to reach. The three allied countries claimed that they discussed many possible options as to how they were to deal with the increased tests, however, none were mentioned specifically. North Korea has stopped testing missiles during the Beijing Olympics, but analysts, according to the AP, expect tests will continue at the close of the games. Although sanctions have been issued against North Korea by organizations including the Security Council, Russia and China have called for their removal due to the increasingly bleak economic situation of the country.

Sanctions against North Korea must not be lifted, for the protection of the United States, its allies, and the world. China and Russia tend to ally themselves with fellow authoritarian countries, and the U.S. must not yield to their pressure to ease sanctions. It will be interesting to see whether or not North Korea continues to test weapons after the olympic games. It is possible that North Korea doesn’t want to upstage China by testing missiles, but it’s also plausible that further tests would take the attention off of China’s human rights violations. I have a suspicion that the new methods Blinken and his counterparts are discussing are mere tactics to deter North Korea from testing missiles. I do have faith that eventually, the U.S. and its allies will be able to successfully curb the danger of North Korea, but doing so is incredibly difficult when it is allied with China.

The class has not recently discussed North Korea in-depth, as other global issues, the Ukrainian border crisis, and the Chinese human rights issues, overshadow North Korea’s relations. However, we have discussed how areas such as North Korea are susceptible to domination from outside countries. The most likely country, in this case, would be China. Although China and North Korea are currently allied, China could easily turn on its current ally in order to control more land, abiding by the Organic Theory. Additionally, North Korea is relatively close to where some believe a new realm is forming, potentially making for a future of potentially volatile confrontations.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/antony-blinken-japan-north-korea-hawaii-south-korea-c6fd0b26a9337a1b6552e0ad475e106b U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with government officials of South Korea and Japan to discuss their nuclear policies towards North Korea.
