The response to the attack was non-violent demonstrations at first, though security in the area used deadly force killing over 1,400 civilians. In response to the year-long chaos, through the Chinese U.N. ambassador, Zhang Jun, the U.N. The Security Council wants to avoid more violence and a civil war on Friday. Jun told reporters that after hearing briefings from people in the region, the Security Council’s main goal is to calm the region down. U.N. experts have said that if the crisis continues it will turn into a civil war. The ASEAN, a Southeast Asian regional group, of which Myanmar is a member state, has tried to mediate between the two sides. The ASEAN wants to prevent a civil war due to concerns of how the region would be affected by it. Hun Sen, Cambodia’s president, is the first foreign official to visit the region, though it is part of the ASEAN 5-point plan to stop violence. China and other countries welcome the efforts made by the Cambodian official. Before the coup 1 million people were in need, after it’s closer to 14 million.

I believe that all countries in the region should be working together to stop the conflict in Myanmar. To me, it goes beyond political views and it seems like the surrounding countries are trying to help but if there are those that aren’t it does not seem right for them to just stand back and watch it all unfold. There are 14 million people that are in need and, yes, one country could have even more in need, in that case I understand, but when a country like China or Japan or Cambodia does not help, even though all of them are, it just doesn’t make sense. How can a country’s government which usually never fully represents the people be a bias of how the rest of that country should be seen. Also I believe that the security council & the ASEAN should do more. Though it does seem that under the Cambodian presidency the ASEAN has done more.

Each country is working for their own national interest. If Myanmar stays in disarray for much longer it could have an impact on the indo-pacific trade route in which China has very prominent ties to. Also the Indo-Pacific region is a region that both Japan and Cambodia want China to lessen their control over so each country can take advantage of the region. It’s obvious that there are definitely international laws most likely being broken in the country of Myanmar. It was a realist idea to enact a coup rather than use diplomatic or democratic ways for Myanmar to change. Also the main part of the story is the ruling that the U.N. The Security Council had in response to the year long conflict.

https://apnews.com/article/business-china-asia-myanmar-global-trade-b84087d1ad317f5cb5da9b30bfc53f3c On Feb 1, ‘21 a military coup was held in Myanmar where the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi was swiftly taken over.
