While the Russo-Ukrainian war is ongoing, China\u2019s foreign minister Wang Yi still asserts that Russia is China\u2019s \u201cstrategic partner.\u201d Yi, at a press conference, discussed the importance of the two countries\u2019 relationship. China and Russia have even executed joint military drills. Amidst many countries imposing sanctions on Russia, Chinese authorities have stated their disagreement with the imposition of sanctions, citing they cause too much damage to global markets and regional stability. In prior conversations, Russia has supported China\u2019s claims that Taiwan belongs to mainland China. However, China has not fully reciprocated this concept with the Luhansk and Donetsk territories Russia has claimed. Yi assured listeners that the Russian and Chinese citizens have a solid relationship. U.S. Secretary of State Blinken criticized China\u2019s inaction, as did EU spokesman Peter Stano. The AP article closed with reports that China had gone to great lengths to avoid bringing up the Russo-Ukrainian war in public or on state TV. Chinese state TV networks redacted parts of the paralympics programming discussing the ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation evolving between Russia and Ukraine is going to test China\u2019s relationship with Russia. If Russia\u2019s stability lessens to a large extent, there are not many strong reasons for China to continue the \u201ciron clad\u201d relationship with the country. China is very likely to remain as neutral as possible in this situation, predominantly because they are determined to subvert western influence and align themselves with other authoritarian countries. However, the realist viewpoint sees alliances as merely a friendship of convenience, which is precisely what I believe Russia and China\u2019s bond to be. If the U.S. and its allies are able to topple Russia\u2019s government, I do not believe China will have enough vested interest to continue their partnership. China\u2019s encroachment on Taiwan is also concerning. With the world distracted with the Russo-Ukrainian war, China has a great opportunity to draw Taiwan closer to them in a plethora of ways. It is imperative that the Chinese encroachment of Taiwan is viewed as paramount to global security as the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many hypothetical situations have been analyzed in class, including the future of Russia and China\u2019s relationship. One of the hypothetical situations analyzed was the possibility that China could turn on Russia, and the current situation is definitely testing their relationship. Additionally, IGOs have an incredibly difficult time enforcing their will on both Russia and China; the world is seeing them use sanctions to coerce or deter them from taking further action. What surprises me is how pertinent the academic theories such as Sea Power and Heartland theory are to current situations; the implications of such theories and the motivation behind Russia and China\u2019s actions are directly in alignment with such theories.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
