One of the military’s primary sources of income is found in its oil and gas company, which the EU has now placed sanctions on. The EU has targeted 65 officials and 10 companies in asset freezes and visa bans.

Additionally, Total Energies and Chevron have stated that they are pulling all operations out of Myanmar, as the human rights violations continue to worsen in the country.

It is estimated that around 50% of Myanmar’s international income is from oil and natural gas, and MOGE, one of the major companies targeted in the sanctions, is expected to bring in $1.5 billion alone. The sanctions will undoubtedly have an impact on the country.

The sanctions are primarily in response to the atrocities that have occured in the country. The Myanmar military has targeted civilians, specifically Rohingya Muslims, in what has now been called an ethnic genocide. Because the sanctioned companies regularly provide support to the Myanmar military, there is hope that this will create change, and the genocide may stop.

However, it is unfortunate that the EU had to take actions in the form of sanctions, as this will not only affect the military, but the country as a whole. It is clear that the economy will begin to suffer, as Myanmar is losing a big portion of its revenue, and this may worsen domestic conditions, unfairly impacting people who had no say in the issue.

In class, we have discussed major international alliances such as NATO, the UN, and in this article, the EU. The EU (or European Union) is an alliance that was formed after WWII. It is made up of around 30 member states, and focuses on political and economic relations between countries. Originally, its goal was to promote peace and democracy throughout Europe, but as we can read in the article, the EU is now involved in extra-continental relations, making its mark in areas such as East Asia as well.

Link to Article: “New EU sanctions target Myanmar military’s lucrative gas firm“ After the 2021 coup in Myanmar that overthrew the civilian government, the military has held dominance over the country.
