This election is one of the closest races in the country’s history. With 98% of the ballots Yoon won by 0.8% (48.6% v. 47.6%). Yoon is set to take office in May 2022 which starts his single five- year term, thus becoming the leader of the 10th largest economy. the campaigns from both sides repeatedly mocked and demonized the other, which furthered the already divided country. Yoon’s critics have said that he lacks experience in politics and international relations. Yoon has said that he will seek to boost trilateral security cooperation with the US and Tokyo. As well as dealing with North Korea’s provocations sternly, especially after the recent missile launch. Yoon also plans to enhance the US alliance, center of the foriegn policy part of his campaign. As Well as taking an assertive stance on china

My take on the new President elect of South Korea is that he does lack experience. I know that I don’t know anything about foreign policy, but just saying that you will be assertive against one of the major powers that is a little over 1300 miles away from the country does not seem like a good strategy. With a country like China that has so much power in the region it will be difficult for Yoon to do what he says and take an assertive stance even with the help from the US. The plan itself could be good if it weren’t so vague. Coming from that, most of the forign policies that were described in the article were very vague especially when it came to North Korea. That is troubling because like with China just saying you will be stern, might not be the best decision. It is most likely that Kim Jong Un won’t listen that well, but I will say that it is better that Yoon is President Elect since Un wanted Lee.

This relates to the class because with the new President and his foreign Policy could have an affect on the world. Also the executive branch or the equivalent to it in South Korean standards is being talked about in the class. Along with gaining a stronger alliship with the United States, this relates to the class because not only is the alliship between the two states part of South Korea’s foerign policy, the United States plays a major role. China as well, which is the major power in the region, will play a major role in how Yoon’s term goes. Not only that but it was the country’s National interest to elect the president that they did. Also with the careful relationship between North and South Korea and how that will affect the region connects to the class.

https://apnews.com/article/business-elections-voting-campaigns-seoul-f29dd8982b18c1f7318d579b9afc83f1 South Korea’s most recent Presidential election on Thursday, elected the conservative former top prosecutor Yoon Suk Yeol, People Power Party, beating his liberal rival Lee Jae-myung, governing Democratic Party.
