Cambodian Minister Prak Sokhonn said that “minor” progress had been made throughout the talks. Cambodia and Myanmar are both members of ASEAN. The IGO passed a resolution to encourage the cessation of violence in Myanmar; however, violence is still rampant. The Associated Press reports that Myanmar has “done little” to implement the peace resolution passed by ASEAN and the UN last April. Humanitarian aid has been difficult to execute due to the high incidences of violence in the country, leaving much of the country without aid. One major source of animosity between ASEAN and Myanmar is Myanmar’s refusal to allow ASEAN to meet with Myanmar’s former president Aung San Suu Kyi. Although Myanmar previously agreed to allow discussions between Cambodia and Suu Kyi’s party representatives, the fact that all of her party’s officials and staff are currently wanted criminals has not allowed talks to take place.

Myanmar’s civil war, as described by the UN, is an extremely sad situation. The Russo-Ukrainian war is diverting international attention from the issue, which is leaving many of the citizens without humanitarian aid. Although I hope the situation in Myanmar will improve swiftly, it is doubtful that it will. I do have hope, however, that once the war in Europe is resolved, the UN, with the backing of the security council, will move to take action. It is possible that China and Russia will halt UN efforts to improve the situation, but humanitarian aid resolutions will be easier to pass. The region of Southeast Asia and Oceania are currently volatile, opening up the region to the influence of China or the U.S. Western countries will likely also start warming up to ASEAN countries such as Cambodia so the U.S. and its allies can control trade through the South China Sea and surrounding areas.

Myanmar’s political situation has frequently been discussed in class lectures and discussion. Recently, it was classified as an almost-failed state during lecture. We also discussed the legitimacy of a government, which is currently up in the air for the state of Myanmar, as its current form is derived from a coup. The political culture in Myanmar is vastly different than in western countries. Open dialogue is accepted in the U.S., Great Britain, France, or Japan; however, in Myanmar, the opposition has been silenced, as seen by the incarceration of Suu Kyi. Lastly, the geographic location of Myanmar lends itself to influence from outside powers due to the geopolitical strategicness of the country.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/business-asia-myanmar-global-trade-southeast-asia-814d2b22402e9173ce90447e3eaa197b While violent domestic unrest continues in Myanmar, the Cambodian Foreign Minister met to have discussions on a cease-fire with Myanmar’s Senior General Ming Aung Hlaing.
