These talks were about how the new Taliban government will function within the middle east. China notably sought to assert itself as a regional power almost userpoing the role held previously by the US. China wants to position itself as the opposition of the US and feed off of anti western sentiment to garner favorable trade deals and potential allies in the region. During the hearing China insured that Taliban will not conduct operations in Chinese territory, this comes after a concern from Chinese officials over the Uyghur muslim population potentally being a rallying cry for Taliban action. China also reaffirmed their kindreadship with Russia and while details have yet to be announced from the meeting it is unlikely that a change to the Russian-Chinese dynamic would happen. This scrutiny comes after China&#8217;s lack of criticism for Russia&#8217;s action in Ukraine with Chinese officials stating that it was Ukraine that brought it upon themselves for provoking Russia with NATO. China has stated that their initiative in this meeting is to create a united and peaceful Afghanistan and bring about a resolution to the conflict that plagues the region. Should China be successful in this endeavor it would radically alter the power structure of the region. A Chinese backed Taliban government would have the potential to create a longstanding government which is an anomaly in the history of Afghanistan. Should China provide military support then the Taliban would also be able to assert itself as a dominant power in the region.
