Australia is seeking to expedite agreements with Norwegian missile companies to get their fleet armed with missiles that will be able to contest China’s missiles. Australia also wants to up the schedule for fighter jets and intercontinental ballistic missiles supplied by the US. This renewed focus on military spending comes in light of China’s announcement that they will be creating a security pact with the Solomon Islands. This agreement is to “maintain order and reason” however it allows China to send troops and naval warships dangerously close to Australian waters. Thus the measures taken by Australia are reactionary ones that exist to oppose Chinese influence in the Pacific Ocean. Despite claims from Australia China denies that it is using the Solomon Islands as a foothold for further military operations they instead claim that it is Australia that is raising tensions with these claims. Currently, the South China sea is controlled by US-backed countries that provide pushback against Chinese influence within the region however should this “block” be broken then China will have full access to the Pacific Ocean allowing them to move destroyer vessels anywhere they please. The potential effects of this could be seen in the Solomon Islands where a Chinese military presence allows for smaller countries to have greater control of their population likely at the expense of democracy. Recently China has made great strides in gaining control over the South China sea with missiles being set up and ships being harassed and shot at. The Solomon Islands are the most recent step in this goal of control over that region. Despite protests from New Zealand and Australia about a lack of justification for the installation of military operations in the Solomon Islands China will continue forward with the operation. Now Australia will have to wait and see what the reaction to the new influence from China will be.

https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-china-europe-australia-aba6501776092c39870f70d3a2b2a7a1 This article details a directive by the Australian government to accelerate pre-existing military contracts.
