Restrictions are yet again to be put into effect, particularly in the city of Shanghai where a majority of the cases have been reported (5,982 out of the 8,655 cases nationwide were from Shanghai). Shanghai also happens to have the largest population of Japanese expatriates inhabiting it out of all other regions and cities in the country, giving Japan cause for alarm when the lockdown was announced. It is expected that the restrictions will be put in place as immediately as possible and that flights in and out of cities with high infection rates like Shanghai will be terminated for the foreseen future, which is critical because China has the capability of executing strict protocols very quickly due to the fact that it is an authoritarian state and policy from the dictator has little to no opposition.

To see China once again struggling with COVID-19 and variant breakouts is highly concerning for the rest of the world considering that, even with the most intensive restrictions and dedicated effort from the government in stopping the spread of disease, China has not eradicated the virus, spelling bad news for the countries of the rest of the world, most of which have no chance at enacting such serious anti-COVID measures as China. Particularly in the United States where even such simple methods for combating disease as face masks have been met with furious criticism and rebellion. Especially in metropolitan areas, keeping up tough lockdown measures are significantly more difficult as closer proximity between people will always result in more infections. However, a good note to be taken away from China’s current outbreak is that almost all of those people that have reported being sick have also reported very mild or no symptoms which follows the trend that we have seen over the course of the pandemic where new strains have been growing in their contagiousness but decreasing in their actual effect on people’s health. One can never be too carely with such a dangerous virus though as every new strain is only predictable to a certain degree and the trends we have seen so far should not be counted out to hold true in the future.

From an international relations and comparative government perspective, it is interesting to analyze the different courses of action each country the world has taken to combat the virus. In the United States, for example, it has truly exposed the disunity among Americans themselves and between the people and the government which goes to show how controversial our government can be and how difficult it is to achieve harmony in our country. However, Japan is quite the opposite in its mindset towards the virus and pandemic and the people have followed their government recommendations and been compliant with the government’s attempts to protect public health, showing both the different attitude that the Japanese have toward government from Americans and indicating how successful each country might be in fully expelling the virus.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20220331_12/ In China, COVID-19 cases have been back on the rise after a strong effort by China to quell the spread of the disease in the early stages of the pandemic when they imposed extremely tight lockdowns with strict curfews and enforced quarantining to the point where citizens were basically locked within their homes.
