However, the Han-Chinese are the majority ethnic group and they also hold power in government. In order to populate the rural western frontier of China, the government has encouraged ethnically Han citizens to migrate westward as well as attempting to “re-educate” ethnic minorities in the West in order to integrate them with broader Chinese society. This “re-education” is in reality, an abuse of ethnic minorities, specifically Uyghur muslims in the Xinjiang region. Many activist groups claim that religious persecution, violence, and other humanitarian crimes have occured at these “re-education” camps. In response to these credible allegations, the United Nations has sent human rights watchers to China. Currently, the UN officials are in quarantine, however once completed they will travel to Xinjiang and complete a “technical mission”.

Although the United Nations is sending humanitarian watchers to China, this will do little to change the situation in Xinjiang because of China’s P5 status in the United Nations Security Council, arguably the most important body of the United Nations. Also, China is able to hide the abuses from the United Nations officials as the humanitarian watchmen can only do so much. Also, even if the UN watchmen find and document the abuse they can do essentially nothing to stop the Chinese government’s actions as the United Nations has to respect the country’s sovereignty, even if it is committing brutal crimes within its borders.

China has used to coercion to integrate ethnic minorities into its government. Firstly, the current regime was established by a civil war in the mid 1900s and throughout the civil war the Communist party forced territories to join the regime’s new country or face violence. The current Chinese government continues to use coercion, by trying to strip ethnic minorities of their culture and force them to be “more Chinese” in order to integrate them into Chinese society. Also, these large cultural differences exist because the Uyghur people live in a border land far from the ecumene of China, therefore distance decay has made the two cultures different.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/un-rights-team-china-ahead-xinjiang-visit-2022-04-26/ China is the third largest country in the world and within it encompasses hundreds of different ethnic groups.
