But before the conflict in Ukraine ever unfolded, the UK highlighted that they would want to begin expanding it’s relations with countries in East Asia (this was stated in 2020). Now, Japan has taken intense action against the actions of Russia, including providing Ukraine with supplies, weapons, and military training. By doing this, they have begun solidifying a more close relationship with western countries, evidenced by the talks that have ensued this past week between Boris Johnson (UK) and Fumio Kishida (Japan) where it was established that the two military powers would begin working more closely together.

In my opinion, this seems like a positive development towards relations of the western European countries and east asia (excluding maybe China)- because the west has such a lengthy history of either ignoring east Asian countries entirely or trying to take them over. Because of this, I feel that for much of modern history east Asian countries have widely avoided extensive relations with other countries, preferring a policy of isolationism. Although I can’t say that the conflict in Ukraine has been a good thing, I may be inclined to think that it has stimulated important relations between countries and provided as a uniting factor for much of the globe.

The pattern of alliances in this specific instance is also very interesting to me. Much in the way that Russia has attempted to pursue expansion into smaller territories through their invasion of Ukraine, China has attempted to do the same in relation to Taiwan. Originally, I wrote about this in relation to a motivator for Japan to join the western countries (such as Germany) in taking down Russia. But I also believe that this has helped Japan and the UK to form their military alliance, because in order to take down both expanding countries and quell the conflict, both sides will have to take similar actions against their ‘foes’. In this specific instance, I think that the relationship/alliance that the UK and Japan has built relies on the fact that Japan will be waiting to see exactly how the UK/EU takes down Russia in order to implement the same strategies towards China.

https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-putin-boris-johnson-london-europe-89866f48f04c8ad1849505c39bef50ff As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, outreach efforts by western countries have increased to try and minimize the fallout from the conflict, as well as protect other countries from Russia’s influence.
