This two day summit has multiple missions and goals- the first being to extend an arm to the pacific region and continue to foster relations with the region and create prospective alliances for the future. To further show the dedication Biden has towards this mission, he stated that the US would commit more than $150 million to be allotted to Southeast Asian maritime, climate, and public health infrastructure. On Friday, the group will engage in more serious talks about alliances and global doings at the State Department.

I talked about this already in my article about relations between Japan and the UK being fostered recently, but I find the recent focus on East Asian countries really fascinating. From a political standpoint, the involvement from western countries such as the US, the UK, and Germany into East Asian affairs is mostly a counteract/defense mechanism against China’s impending (?) invasions, especially as they seemingly prepare for invasions in Taiwan. But where the UK formed it’s current alliance with Japan based off of military power and involvement, Biden seems to be leading the charge on providing these countries with an arguably more powerful defense: a well run country. What we’ve seen recently with Ukraine is that their access and investment into powerful ports as well as relations with other European countries has benefited them in the fight against Russia. The US providing these East Asian countries with the opportunities to do the same thing helps are preemptive action for the future of these countries.

Additionally, Biden’s diplomacy (through his funding of these programs and efforts in South Asia) may serve as coercion to keep any of these countries from joining an alliance with North Korea, China, or Russia. It’s in each countries ( Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam ) national interest to both accept the boost from the US and to avoid involvement with the trifecta of countries mentioned above. Biden’s actions in this case are likely to give way to reciprocity in the future, making it more likely for the US to receive a benefit of some kind on the global level. Although the involvement in East Asia currently may be mostly for political reasons, I believe it could be very beneficial to the globe in the long run.

https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-biden-japan-united-states-58fb1071c04114c2f2371fed2b768f In order to refocus life on the pacific/east Asian region, president Joe Biden has hosted the first Association of Southeast Asian nations in Washington, DC.
