Just recently Lee Jae-yong, the heir to samsung, has been arrested for his previous bribery accusations. This is the first time the leader of a major conglomerate has been put to trial for corruption charges in south Korea, which means this could potentially be a huge step democratically. President Park, the person on the other end of the bribery scandal is also set to step in front of the constitutional court, but currently is not at risk of being arrested and tried in criminal court due to her current office.

Another noteworthy happening in the middle east is going down in Indonesia. In the upcoming gubernatorial election in Jakarta , Indonesia, is what many political analysts are calling a litmus test of religious tolerance. This position is often seen as a stepping stone to the presidency, which means the outcome can be an insight to the entire country, rather than Jakarta. Every news article, editorial, and scholarly sources says the Christan- Chinese incumbent Basuki Tjahaja Purnama is the most qualified and fit to run the country, but the election In Jakarta apparently isn’t that simple. Indonesia is a majority Muslim country (85%) and there is a very large, very conservative, and sometimes even anti-LGBT movement that has loads of voters motivated to vote for a Muslim candidate, for the sole reason of “defending their religion”. Quite frankly this pisses me off. Being Muslim is good, and having unpopular or even hateful opinions is fine, but when a democratic election to office is influenced by something as insubstantial, and totally irrelevant as religion, I see that as a direct undermining of democracy. I believe this election will be an indication of how moderate Indonesia really is in this current day and age, and where it might put them, among our new president and foreign policy.

This week has been a relatively good news week for east Asia, and while thats not usually a good thing regarding global politics, it does provide for some interesting discussion and analysis. so get ready.
