Joe Biden, the president of the United States, has decided to nominate one of his national security aids to be an ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, in order to continue his attempts to further relations in the pacific region. This happened after he wrapped up two days worth talks with ASEAN in Washington DC in order to continue to counteract Chinese dominance of the region, which mimics the Russian expansionist policies currently being enacted on Ukraine. Yohannes Abraham, the nominee, is chief of staff to the White House National Security Council and will be required to be confirmed by the Senate. By sending Abraham, Biden hopes to counteract Chinese threatening policies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the small countries surrounding China, such Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippians, and Thailand, have avoided taking action against Russia (such as imposing sanctions) in the Ukraine crisis. This is due to a combination of reasons, such as reliance on the country for hardware or even fear. It’s possible that Biden aims to sway this resolution by sending an ambassador- and it’s also possible that it’s to counteract China’s disruption of solar energy production in ASEAN countries, which in turn disrupts Biden’s clean energy policies that he promised when he ran for election in 2019-2020. Although the ambassador nomination seems to have a multitude of strategic benefits, I believe that on a surface level it will also benefit international relations as a whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I say this because I believe that much of the the eastern hemisphere struggles with involved international relations and affairs because the western hemisphere has left them out of much of it. Western development and technology has evolved very differently from Eastern, and I think that it often resulted in tensions that may have been alleviated by simply making bigger efforts to include East Asia in international affairs (and not just imperialist policy). By beginning to include and support East Asian countries, Biden (and other western leaders) may be leading us towards a future of increased global communication- benefiting everyone. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
