This has brought a shift to the debate on continued military presence on the island, due to how assertive China has been growing. The island is used as a military base and is closer to Taiwan than even Seol, Beijing, and Tokyo. Because of this, Japanese officials have built up a military presence on the Nansei island chain, which extendends 1,200 kilometers from Japan’s main islands to Yonaguni. They built the base on Yonaguni to combat the fear of invasion. At first, the base wasn’t supported, but because of the Chinese saber-rattling and the string of maritime, the base had a more solidified support, despite some outliers disdain.

This article is important because it highlights the effects of China going after Taiwan, and how Japan has been brought into the conflict. This means the rest of the region could be at risk for potential Chinese aggression. This could bring lasting effect on the region as other countries are potential swept into a conflict with China. I think this event is quite intense for the reason that China might start being more aggressive twards Japan. I think this event happend because not only is Yonaguni close to Taiwan, but also because China see’s the Senkaku of Japan as their own, which is an ongoing dispute.

This incident can be tied back to IGO’s. As the 80th member of the United Nations who joined proceeding the two world wars, if China attacks Japan, the rest of the countries in the UN must go to war with China, unless they want their connections and alliances to be served. If you think about it that way, it is highly unlikely that China will try to start a conflict with Japan. It wouldn’t be smart from a strategic standpoint to attack Japan and possibly lose a lot of countries to trade with, the big one being the United States.

A remote Japanese island called Yonaguni, 110 kilometers from Taiwan, a Chinese missile fired during a drill last month landed on the shores of Yonaguni.
