China’s growing presence in the South China Sea and its gradual uptick of influence among Pacific nations has alarmed the United States. Palau has threatened to look to China for support if it’s not given enough financial support. I believe this is a bluff. Palau recognizes and supports Taiwan, and has even called for its ascension to the U.N. and to be recognized as a legitimate state internationally. Palau has made such a bluff to give itself leverage over the United States. It is exploiting its increasing geostrategic significance, all in a bid to attain greater support regarding its infrastructure and economy. Although, If Palau’s attempts are successful, other Pacific island countries could also attempt to renegotiate similar terms with the United States, as they’re aware they act as a buffer to China’s influence in the Pacific. More economic support could allow these countries to finally have the resources they need to combat climate change as global water levels gradually rise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connection to Class:<\/strong> The C.F.A. acts as an economic, political, and military IGO between the United States, Palau, Micronesia, and the Solomon Islands. The importance of this IGO has increased as China has exerted more influence in the Pacific.
