Myanmar’s ambassador to Bangladesh blamed the Arkan Army rebel group for the shelling. While Khurshed Alan, a secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangladesh, claims Myanmar’s military junta must take responsibility. Furthermore, Khan Kamal, Bangladesh’s home minister, stated that efforts are underway to find a peaceful solution. However, he threatens that the United Nations will be called upon if more shelling occurs along the border. Bangladesh is home to 1.2 million Rohingyas, a persecuted ethnic group in Myanmar. Bangladesh’s government has found this large group of immigrants unmanageable and has attempted to repatriate them back to Myanmar. Although, the militia junta that runs Myanmar has set conditions for repatriation, which has made repatriation of the Rohingya difficult. Professor Imtiaz Ahmed, based in Dhaka, believes Myanmar had staged the incident to delay or cancel Bangladesh’s attempts to repatriate the Rohingya. Experts also believe China, an ally of the military junta, may be behind the escalation. They claim China seeks to prevent Bangladesh from joining the “Quad” and are asking Bangladesh to join their initiatives of the GSI and GDI.

Analysis: The significance of this article relays to the fact that Myanmar will not view the Rohingya as its citizens. Bangladesh has been negatively affected by the global pandemic, and the recent sparking of the Russo-Ukraninan war has made it harder to feed its people. It shouldn’t come as a surprise Bangladesh would advocate for something this drastic to help manage a potential food security crisis, especially in the wake of escalation in Ukraine, which provides a notable portion of the world’s food supply. It is more likely Ahmed’s explanation is right about why shells had come from Myanmar, as the Arkan Army likely wouldn’t have focused on the Rohingya more so than Myanmar’s actual government. Furthermore, it would more likely be a goal for the junta to keep the Rohingya from coming back to Myanmar. But, the escalation may have pushed Bangladesh further toward the “Quad” (a security dialogue between India, Japan, Australia, and the US). Therefore, if the claims of China perpetuating the conflict are true, they may have only potentially soured relations with Bangladesh and made them less likely to be neutral.

Connection to Class: I believe this conflict has likely further delayed the charter of BIMSTEC, a political and economic IGO between Bhutan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. India and Pakistan’s rivalry had already delayed the IGO since the 1990s, but another regional rivalry could be the IGO’s eventual demise. Additionally, the Rohingya is to remain a stateless nation, no matter the outcome of negotiations. Whether it’s the deliberate targeting of the Rohingya or China attempting to coerce Bangladesh into a stance of neutrality, the Rohingya are unlikely to return to their homelands and will remain unwanted by both governments.

Link to the article: https://thediplomat.com/2022/09/tensions-escalate-along-bangladesh-myanmar-border/ Summary: The shelling of the Tumbru Bazar border region between Bangladesh and Myanmar has recently increased.
