Both of these leaders have upped their military spending and have worked together to alert the world of China’s danger. All of this has led both lawmakers in Taiwan and the US to believe that Japan will protect its borders from an attack from China, however, according to analysts, this is highly unlikely. Besides which, Japan is not pledged to help Taiwan in a time of war. In 2015, the Japanese Prime Minister made a major change to Japan’s pacifist constitution. He lifted the ban on “collective self defense”, which he did to protect Japan and move closer to the US. It was not, however, done to enter a foriegn war. This did not prove to be popular to the public. Though unlikely to ever enter a military scenario, it will likely play an auxiliary role because of its relations with the US.

This article is important because it shows a perspective that I hadn’t thought about before when it comes to Japan. It’s also important because it underlines how unlikely it is that Japan would play any role in the Chinese and Taiwan conflict to follow. This means for the region that Japan doesn’t have any obligation to help Taiwan if China attacks Taiwan. I think this a smart move from Japan, because if Taiwan got attacked by China and Japan had and obligation to help Taiwan, that would be a huge blow to their military and possibly cause China to go after them.

An interesting part of all of this is that Taiwan is not an officially recognized country. To make matters even more interesting is that Taiwan, which is officially recognized as part of the Republic of China, is an island separated from China by the Taiwan strait. Another thing brought about by the tense tensions between Taiwan and China is the dispute if Taiwan should become a country. They have all of the qualifications to become a country, just like in the Vatican city, but they lack the control/power to break off from China completely and become their own country.

Even though both Japan and Taiwan do not have diplomatic ties, they have become closer culturally, and due to the efforts of Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing wen, and the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe.
