Taiwan’s presidential office in another statement also reiterated that it is the responsibility of both parties to maintain peace and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait, and that bloodshed was not an option. This comes in the wake of the Communist Party Congress in Beijing these last few days. In his opening speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that they will not renounce the use of force to enforce their sovereignty over Taiwan.

Analysis: Taiwan is well-aware of how Hong Kong’s “one country, two systems” is working out. It is simply a lie. Giving up sovereignty for the idea that the mainland Chinese government, which has lied before and would have full authority over the region, would keep its word in maintaining Taiwan’s democracy is simply false. The suppression of pro-democratic protesters in Hong Kong was international news only a few years ago. Xi Jinping is only increasing tensions between itself and the west. While a war may still not be likely, provocative exercises in the Taiwan Strait could trigger some western nations to sanction China, which would further the economic crisis the country is facing right now. Xi Jinping has essentially backed himself into a similar corner Putin has, with unfulfilled military threats making him look weak, and fulfilled ones only worsening the state of his country in regards to economics. Taiwan has remained defacto independent since the Kuomintang fled to it in 1949 after it had lost control of mainland China in the Chinese Civil War. It is very likely this uneasy status quo will remain, unless Xi Jinping is a true man of his word.

Connection to Class: The recognition and status of Taiwan as a state has remained greatly contested since the Kuomintang had assumed control of the island. It had originally been recognized as the government of mainland China up until 1971, when a U.N. resolution had recognized the actual controllers of mainland China, the People’s Republic, as the true China. This has led to a contested status of Taiwan, which is not actually controlled by the P.R.C. Only 13 states recognize Taiwan today, meaning Taiwan doesn’t meet the full sovereignty requirement to be a legitimate state, therefore making it a non-recognized state.

https://www.reuters.com/world/china/taiwan-says-it-will-not-back-down-its-sovereignty-2022-10-16/ Summary: Taiwan’s president has announced it will not renounce its sovereignty nor will it sell out its democracy to join with China under a one country two governments policy.
