North Korea already launched 23 missiles on the previous day and launched 6 more the next day. Sources say that the missile flew 500 kilometers with a maximum altitude of 150 kilometers. The missiles were fired from the an area near Koskan or North Hwanghae Province. The missiles were fired for testing reasons and were not targeted at any specific country. These launches actually triggered an emergency system in Japan that urged residents to take shelter and that the missile could fly over the archipelago. According to Fumio Kushida, Japan´s prime minister, said that the missile was a ¨violent action¨ and that it would not be permissable.

Tensions between North and South Korea and Japan have been tense since North Korea fired off fusillades of missiles for the sake of testing and military readiness. North Korea says that it is all in preparation for invasion. These tensions have caused North Korea and Japan to no longer trust each other, and North Korea has been lying about the capabilities of its missiles in order to increase their intimidation. Last March, North Korea launched a Hwasong-17 missile that is the most powerful and modern missile they have to date. The missile covered 671 miles and landed in the west waters of Japan. After Japan investigated the missile debris, it turned out that this missile was actually a Hwasong-15, an older model. North Korea exaggerated the effectiveness of their missile.

North Korea´s action can be explained through the theory of defensive realism. The history of North Korea has been preserve its own national security and keeping contact with the outside world very limited. The region has been under threat in the past, so it will continue to operate in a way where it looks out for its own self interests by testing weapons and ensuring their military power is strong enough. By testing out their missiles, they hope to send a message to other countries not to encroach on their land and their ideas.

Link to article: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/02/world/asia/north-korea-missile-japan.html According to the Japanese government, North Korea launched more ballistic missiles eastward from an inland area on Nov. 4.
