This acquisition follows reports from local media that claimed that China had instated a “clandestine network” of candidates that were backed by the Chinese government. Reports from intelligence officials claimed that 11 candidates were directly supported by China in the 2019 elections and that along with directly funding some candidates, Chinese operatives had served as advisers to many candidates. These reports even found that $250,00 had been directed through the office of a principal MP.

This story makes me immediately think of Russian interference in the US’s 2016 elections. This was an attempt by the Russian government to sway the country’s voters to vote for then-canadaite Donald Trump, through several means such as spreading miss-information, creating social unrest through social media, and even cyber attacks against the Democratic National Committee. The main similarities in my mind are: 1. An eastern power using both indirect and direct methods to affect the democracy of a major North American, and 2. Despite the fact China directed these actions at Canada, I believe it is with the purpose of weakening the US. Canada is one of, if not the, biggest trading partners of the US. I believe that China did this to try and gain influence on the US’s borders.

As to how this relates to class, I think that this move is a form of offensive realism. In this case China is trying to expand and strengthen themselves, as not only an attack on Canada, but an indirect attack on the United States. They are using their power, not to insure national security, but to make aggressive moves outwards to destabilize foreign States, making it offensive realism instead of defensive realism.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-63551134 On Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, accused China of trying to influence Canadian elections, saying that China was playing “aggressive games” with Canadian democracy.
