In a recent discovery from the White House National Security Council, North Korea has been accused of shipping rockets and missiles to Russia to support the war in Ukraine. The export of North Korean weapons is banned under the UN\u2019s regulations placed on the country due to their continuing manufacturing of nuclear weapons. The weapons have apparently been sent to the Wagner Group, which is a pro-Russian arms manufacturer, for use in Ukraine. When accused of the transaction, Wagner\u2019s owner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, denied all speculations and claimed it was a red herring designed to further spread “misinformation” about the war. When the DPRK (North Korea) foreign ministry spokesperson was asked about the shipment, he also claimed that it was just “a red herring, not worth any comment or interpretation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The significance of this article lies in the implications that can be drawn from both countries’ constant denial. While the connection between the DPRK and Russia is well known to be friendly, especially when considering their relations with other countries, it should still be known that the claims that the Security Council have put out are alleged. However, I think that if these allegations are true, it shows the trouble and difficulty that the Russian government has gotten itself into. It is no question that the war in Ukraine has been less than ideal for Russia, and if they are relying on other countries for arms, it only further shows that they are truly struggling to keep up with the costs of war. According to the Council, the Wagner group is supposedly spending close to $100 million each month in war costs. In my opinion, it is only a matter of time before something significant happens in this war. Russia will not be able to continue this funding, and if the discovery of foreign aid, especially from a country like North Korea, continues, it will only continue to highlight their struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no doubt that there are similarities in the struggles that both the DPRK and Russia are facing. When conceptualizing the national interests of the countries, there is reason to suspect they are working together because of the collective goods problem. The outside ridicule and constant display of aggression that each of these countries displays on an international scale show the similarities that they share, despite their different political and national interests. Both countries appear to resort to dominance when getting other countries to cooperate. North Korea isn\u2019t the only country helping Russia, as Iran has also been found to have provided drones in support, and as other countries face ridicule, especially from the west, I think we will continue to see similar levels of cooperation, even if their interests don\u2019t completely match.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
