These talks have resulted in a number of ideas, one of the most important being the bolstering of the U.S Marine Corp. presence in Japan. Resulting from this action will likely be an increased tension with China as it will be seen as “setting up an attack” but importantly it is a sign of possible U.S intervention if China invades Taiwan. That of which China will not want to go to war with the U.S and whoever else joins the brawl. Especially amidst the invasion of Ukraine, NATO countries will likely mostly be spread thin in all aspects.

Analyzing this document, it can be seen that the U.S and the Japanese are cooperating strongly, including a statement that an attack from, and within space, would possibly trigger the mutual defence acts within the alliance. This forces China into a difficult decision as they move forwards. If the United States comes to the defence of Taiwan, China would be forced into a longer lasting war, and would not be able to take Taiwan quickly. Similar to Russia’s angle for the invasion of Ukraine, the longer the war goes on for Russia or China in this case, the more time they have to run out of troops, money, and resources, especially when up against the US, NATO, and other countries as there will be seemingly endless resources feeding into the US side of the war, China’s allies would not be clear if they were to have any other than North Korea. The bolstering of the Marine base on Okinawa also brings more anger from China as not only can the Marine base defend Taiwan, it could very easily be used to attack China via air raid, short to intermediate range ballistic missiles, and it can serve as a smaller naval base to transport marines.

Connecting these events to class, China’s geopolitical strategy for invading Taiwan is going to shift, the risk of losing more than they can gain is higher as a result of the possible US led interference. Another problem is the fact that Japan will be all in on helping the U.S get rid of China, deleting the collective goods problem in certain aspects as Japan will likely put a lot of effort into helping get rid of their regional competitor. With all this in mind, plus India being undecided, an invasion of Taiwan from China with North Korea would be foolish to commit resources to as there are many wild cards.

Last Updated 1/12/23 Block 6 In context to the recent increase of Chinese hostility and threats towards Taiwan, Japan and the US have agreed upon increasing their joint Asian Pacific security.
