The courts have awarded a woman whose family was killed and who was shot in the head but survived 3 million won that the government must pay. the government hasn’t filed an appeal yet or said if they will. The government has denied any wrongdoing and said the killing was justified as firstly the Viet-cong were sometimes disguised as villagers and that there is no actual evidence that the South Korean army actually did it and it may have been the Viet-Cong in disguise.

As we’ve seen with countries like Turkey and the U.S., to get a government to acknowledge atrocities committed by them and help those who they committed them against is usually very difficult and South Korea is one of these. This is a very big deal because as I said in the first paragraph it’s the first and so only time the South Korean government has been held accountable by any of its courts and regardless of whether it appeals or not it doesn’t stop the fact that this will bring attention to the case and the massacre. now i do expect the government to appeal ad try to wither get the case thrown out or pat the woman an insanely negligible amount and as i don’t know if the woman’s court case is self funded or by a organization i don’t know if she’d be able to remain in a protracted legal battle and I also don’t know exactly how south korean litigation works but sadly i’d wager that the government will eventually come out on top but this is still a major moral victory and who knows maybe something will come out of this

Connecting this back to class I think it relates to the small discussion we had about image. we talked about a country for example like turkey who objects to the term of genocide more than they do of the mass killing they did or how america despite it and its citizens seeing it for the most part a beacon of freedom, virtue, and democracy has committed multiple human right violations, war crimes, and overthrowing of democratic governments. South Korea, like other countries, doesn’t want to have the massacre formerly attached to them even if everyone else thinks it to have it formally judicially attached is another thing.

Link: https://apnews.com/article/politics-south-korea-government-vietnam-4f0fc11cc517dd3a4098eb0f027bade5 A south korean court has for the first time ever found the south korean government guilty for its part in a massacre of a vietnam village.
