The main historical issue at hand was Japan’s colonial rule over South Korea during the 20th century, and the atrocities committed there by the Japanese, but no apologies were forthcoming from the Japanese prime minister, who instead only limited himself to expressing regret over what occurred in the past. While South Korea was hoping for an apology, they appear to not view the lack of one as a major issue, as they still are intent on pursuing a better relationship with their close geographical neighbor.

This recent push by both Japan and South Korea to improve relations is in direct response to the growing threat of nearby North Korea and China. As the United States looks to maintain its relationships and influence in the region, it has pushed for its allies, in this case Japan and South Korea, to cooperate more in order to limit the threat from China and North Korea. However, due to the long and fraught history between South Korea and Japan, close ties have been thought impossible, and they still may be difficult, but with the meeting between the two country’s leaders, it is clear that the present threat is much more important than any historical wrongs.

Link to Article: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/07/world/asia/south-korea-japan-summit-apology.html

At a recent meeting and press conference between the leaders of South Korea and Japan, the two countries announced an effort to improve ties, despite the history between the two countries.
