New Zealand’s defense forces are receiving around $500 Million (USD) in extra funding over the next four years, according to Defence Minister Andrew Little. This funding comes as the NZDF faces mass personnel loss (29.8% of full time personnel lost in just two years) and infrastructure degradation, all of which has come at a time when New Zealand is struggling to keep pace with militarization and increased competition in the South Pacific. Recent years have seen New Zealand close down things like the P-3 Orion aircraft fleet, and the loss of three ships due to lack of manpower. A majority of the money is going towards increasing salaries for NZDF soldiers and personnel, in an effort to bring said salaries up to competitive rates when compared to other countries in the region, and allies like the US and UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The increase in salaries for NZDF soldiers and personnel will help not only in retaining current personnel, but also entice future soldiers with offers of better pay and better job prospects than before. Upgrades to military infrastructure will also help New Zealand better prepare for eventual conflict in the region, as tensions between China, its neighbors and the United States grow day after day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
