The accident resulted in water contamination surrounding the border of the city and country. The operator of the damaged power plant and the Tokyo Electric Power Complany (TEPCO) are working on a plan to fix the water contamination using multiple operations. Their first round of operation lasted just over two weeks starting on August 24. TEPCO says that the total amount of treated water released in their first round was 7,800 tons, as planned. They also say they will inspect the discharge over the coming weeks and start the second round of operations when preparations are finished. They hope to carry out four rounds, 31,200 tons, of water discharge by March 2024 and this diluting process of operations is expected to take up to 30 years.

The contamination will have a major impact on animals, drinking water, and nature surrounding the east coast of Japan. This will have a harsh impact on the city of Okuma mainly, but even effects the entire country of Japan. The radiation could cause wildlife to mutate or die off which would be a negative impact on nature. Mutated animals could also spread diseases to other animals making certain foods such as fish inedible. As fish is a big influence in Japaneese culture, sushi and seafood, this would hurt the economy by losing a major profit in the food industry. Not only would Japan be affected in their economy or wildlife, their population could grow disabilities or die from ingesting the contaminated water hurting future gernerations.

In class we have talked about NGO’s who give assistance to groups in need. One example is the Red Cross who offer help to countries experiencing a disaster. The Red Cross or another NGO could help Japan and offer assistance to releasing clean safe water into the Ocean helping achieve their 30 year goal.

Link To Article: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20230911_18/ After a major earthquake and tsunami hit Okuma, Japan in march 2011, this caused a nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.
