MOSCOW (Sputnik)\u00a0\u2014 North Korea sent a letter to\u00a0UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about\u00a0the situation on\u00a0the Korean peninsula amid\u00a0the joint US-South Korean military drills, the North Korean Embassy in\u00a0Russia said in\u00a0a statement obtained by\u00a0Sputnik.<\/p>\n
“Permanent representative of\u00a0North Korea to\u00a0the United Nations [Ja Song Nam] sent a letter to\u00a0the UN secretary-general on\u00a0March 22 due to\u00a0a tense situation on\u00a0the Korean peninsula caused by\u00a0the largest in\u00a0the history joint military drills of\u00a0the United States and South Korea,” the statement said.<\/p>\n
The letter provided details on\u00a0the scale, aim and danger of\u00a0joint US-South Korean military exercises, according to\u00a0the diplomatic mission.<\/p>\n
On March 1, the United States and South Korea launched the Foal Eagle military exercises involving air, naval and ground forces, which are scheduled to\u00a0run through\u00a0April. According to\u00a0Robert Wood, the US permanent representative to\u00a0the Conference on\u00a0Disarmament, the drills were aimed at\u00a0keeping stability on\u00a0the Korean peninsula, however, a Chinese representative warned that the maneuvers would lead to\u00a0further escalation of\u00a0the situation with\u00a0North Korea.<\/p>\n
Tensions on\u00a0the Korean Peninsula escalated since\u00a0North Korea carried out\u00a0a number of\u00a0missile launches and nuclear tests, with\u00a0one of\u00a0the latest being a launch of\u00a0four missiles in\u00a0the direction of\u00a0the Sea of\u00a0Japan conducted on\u00a0March 6 and a new high-thrust rocket engine tested on\u00a0the ground on\u00a0Sunday. The launches are considered to\u00a0be in\u00a0violation with\u00a0the UNSC resolution by\u00a0the United Nations.<\/p>\n
