On monday LDP Policy Research Council Chairperson Hagiuda Koichi landed in Taiwan, that following wednesday he met Tsai Ing-wen, the president of taiwan. Japan urges for there to be peace surrounding Taiwan. Taiwan and Japan have strengthened relations and intend to work together for higher trade and for economic purposes. Japan even talked about expanding the exchange program for japanese students to go over to Taiwan. Overall the conference has helped to strengthen ties between the two nations.

The conference between Taiwan and Japan has significance due to the situation which Taiwan is in. Taiwan is not a recognized nation by the United Nations, this is due to China denying their attempts. China has been very anti Taiwan and even blacklist people / media that mentions Taiwan as a country. This makes Japan’s strengthened relations with Taiwan also mean that Japan will have soured relations with China. China is becoming a large world power through various means, this makes it interesting that Japan would choose Taiwan over China. One possible reason could be because of the american influence over Japan. With america liking Taiwan, maybe Japan will follow suit.

In international relations class, we have talked about the global arena and how all the countries work together or against each other in certain ways. This is an example of two countries working together to support each other economically. Both countries are similar ethnically and with common values, these facts make it easier for Taiwan and japan to work together. This alliance is also an example of nations acting against each other, Japan specifically allied with Taiwan knowing that China would not like it. This could potentially lead to conflict later on if it would happen that China invades Taiwan. Would Japan aid Taiwan still or would they be deterred by the big threat of China?

Link to article: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20231011_26/ Japan’s chief foreign policy maker went and met with Taiwan’s President and have agreed to work together more than they already are.
