When reaserching the number of orangutan killings per year, more than 400 villagers were surveyed and it was determined that 2,000 to 3,000 orangutans are directly killed per year. And studies have shown that there are only 100,000 Bornean orangutans left on the island, and these threats are concerning to the orangutan population for the reason of their only two natural habitats are Borneo and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Although the research is sad, we must bring awareness to the situation and possibly implement policy and extend funding to conserve the wildlife in Bornea and protect the orangutans.

To understand why orangutans are killed every year we must look at the reasons some belive it is reasonable, people are afraid or do not want the animals to destroy crops or gardens, baby orangutans have also been separated from their mothers in order to sell and become performers. Instead of hurting the environment and ecosystem, we must work to preserve it and direct funding to communities to further provide support for the economic state of the country. Another concern is the habitat destruction taking place in the region, this makes it more hard for orangutansto survive and procreate, especially because it was found mothers only have children every 6 to 8 years.

These statistics are a concerning development to the growing problem of environmental issues and if orangutans were to go instinct, would have lasting detremental impacts to not only the surrounding area but the entire international community. This is an important global challenge that should be addressed by global powers and especially the political leaders of Borneo as these killings are objectively illigal. Another connection to class could be the NGO’s attempting to support the protection of orangutans and conservation of natural resources, although experts believe that these organizations should work closer with the smaller communities and villigas that deserse this economic support.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/oct/11/borneo-orangutan-killings-likely-still-occurring-numbers-research Orangutans continue to be illegally killed on the island of Borneo even though it is frowned upon in the culture.
