Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the U.S House of Representatives, Thursday on Capitol Hill. Albanese spoke to Johnson about his hopes that the United States Congress would pass the AUKUS legislation. AUKUS is a three-way pact with Australia, Britain, and the United States that was created as a response to China\u2019s growing global power. AUKUS serves as a defense project that helps provide for the development of advanced weaponry to all three countries and is currently focused on the transfer of nuclear submarines to Australia. Several Australian officials have spoken about their concerns over delays in approving legislation due to the lack of a house speaker in the United States because without Congress approving AUKUS legislation, the project can\u2019t be facilitated. Biden\u2019s acting secretary of defense deputy, Mara Kalin, spoke in favor of a proposal that would allow defense trade to be streamlined among Australia, Britain, and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AUKUS is an essential alliance between Australia, Britain, and the United States for defense purposes and strengthens the relationships between the three countries. If Australia has expressed concerns over America\u2019s delay in passing legislation due to problems with the house speaker then Britain may also be frustrated. The fact that Biden, a Pentagon official, and the deputy under-secretary of defense for policy have underlined the urgency of the AUKUS legislation but it still hasn\u2019t been done shows the many issues that have culminated in the United States from not having an elected house speaker. However, now that Mike Johnson has been elected, if the AUKUS legislation is passed by the December deadline then there won\u2019t be many lasting impacts of the delay and the transfer and maintenance of the submarines can begin, allowing the US to receive their shipyard funding from Australia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Australian Prime Minister\u2019s claims that he hopes the US passed AUKUS legislation relates to the class by showing the issues that can sometimes occur within alliances, specifically in alliances with three large countries where the alliance can be affected if one country isn\u2019t playing its part. The issue also brings up offensive and defensive realists and how Australia, Britain, and the United States are taking a defensive route with their initiatives in order to protect their national order and security. Their defensive methods include investing in nuclear submarines that can be used in defense if another country were to attack, but the weapons aren\u2019t intended to initiate an attack to start conflict or for expansion purposes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
