Li Qiang, the leading voice for the International import expo fair China hosts every year, told people at his opening ceremony that China was looking to open up its economy, meaning that China would import goods and services worth up to $17 trillion within the next FIVE years.

I believe this deal is important to the world because it increases the dependence China has on foreign goods and increases the connectivity that China has on the global market. With this promise to increase imports many countries will look to export to China in order to steal some of the 17 trillion China expects to be circled around the market within the next 5 years. Because of this promise of high gain many countries will begin to fight for trading rights with China and begin to give up large amounts of goods and promises to China in order to make large sums of money. I believe this is yet again another 5 year plan China believes will cement themselves as a large economic power and increase their leverage on the global market and political leverage. If this new 5 year plan works I believe we can be looking at another ambitious 5 year plan that China will set into play in order to push the U.S off the #1 spot and split this new fall of power between China and its potential “allies”.

This is important to IR a because of how we are shown the connections a large economic power can have on the global market. This is also important because we now get to see how the U.S and other countries react to the promise of large sums of money if they trade with China. I do believe that China can be stopped from entering into a war because of their dependence on global help for importing goods and exporting their goods.

Article: https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-pledges-expand-market-access-annual-trade-fair-amid-foreign-criticism-2023-11-05/

In Shanghai, China, November 5th, 2006, China pledged during their annual trade fair that they would be looking to expand their market access as well as their imports from foreign nations.
