They will be meeting in Beijing and Shanghai in hopes of restabilizing their country’s relationship after a disastrous 7 years. After the meeting, their relationship is still fragile. It will likely take many years to strengthen and build the trust back between China and Australia. Although, during the meeting they will discuss ending the wine tariffs which would be worth about 1.2 billion Australian dollars, China’s current aggression in the South China sea, and the unfairly convicted prisoners China is currently holding.

China and Australia have had unstable relations since 2017 due to China’s aggressive foreign policy. In 2018 Australia began rejecting the Chinese pressure of accepting their new Huawei technology because they had national security concerns. In 2020, Beijing put punishing trade restrictions and tariffs on Australian imports on various things like coal and wine. The disruption in trade drastically increased the current tension. Following that, Australia led an investigation to identify COVID-19 origins, which is often considered a political retaliation after the trade dilemma. With this meeting, the Chinese were given the opportunity to push for more Chinese access to all Australia’s resources and halt the Australians from siding completely against them alongside the Americans. While Australia seemed to view the meeting as a necessary push for peace.

The poor relationship has had a great impact on their trade and has caused billions of dollars in losses. In class we discuss diplomacy. Diplomacy is the skill of managing international relations by typically sending a representative abroad. This is a perfect example of diplomacy. The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, is a representative sent to communicate with the leader of China in hopes of improving their overall relationship.

Link to article: https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/04/china/australia-china-albanese-xi-jinping-trade-intl-hnk/index.html November 4th marks the first day of the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese’s four day visit with leader Xi Jinping in China.
