Chen followed this by stressing that the mainland will not leave any room for “Taiwan Independence” separatist activities. These comments were made in response to those made by Hsiao Bi-khim and Lai Ching-te, politicians with Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party who expressed that they saw no timetable on the mainland side to use force on Taiwan. Chen stressed the lack of leniency or tolerance that the mainland will show towards any “Taiwan Independence” forces of any matter. He furthered this by citing the Anti-Secession Law, conveying that China will protect its integrity and sovereignty with whatever measures are deemed necessary. The spokesperson then added, “I want to emphasize that ‘Taiwan Independence’ means war.” Concluding his remarks on the matter, Chen called upon the people of Taiwan to oppose “Taiwan Independence” and promote the peaceful development of relations.
Chen, as a representative of the mainland, shows its opposition to anything not promoting the reunification of the Taiwan Strait. There is a clear emphasis in his message regarding “Taiwan Independence,” which in the eyes of the mainland seems to constitute any action not in full support of the mainland’s goals. Chen also did not hold back when talking about the potential force that will be used, implying that violence will be used if any threat to China’s integrity is felt. The mainland views, as brought to light in these comments, will continue to halt Taiwan from making any progress towards independence, as peace will not coincide. This backs Taiwan into a corner, as they do not stand a chance in war or any means of force without great external help. The Taiwan people’s pursuit of independence from China’s mainland seems unrealistic in its current state. These remarks from China are also not out of character, as the state’s aggressive mentality leads them to control whatever it is capable of.
Tying this event into international relations theories, one thing that becomes evident is the backing of Realist Theory. China holds no remorse or care for the power balance implications that could ensue if force is applied to Taiwan. However, you can look at it through the lens of Liberal Theory when seeing Taiwan’s perspective. Ultimately, however, the contrast of the two shows a clear backing for some form of Constructivism. The internal characteristics of the two territories and their histories have led them to take the approach in which they are. China’s strong authoritarian government and control-seeking government body is something that has come about over centuries and has formed the current mentality of the state. This mindset is what is causing them to express distaste for movements opposing a goal of theirs, reunifying the Taiwan Strait. On the other hand, Taiwan’s struggle for power in its past, peaceful-mindedness, and weaker military is what has come to form the position it is in.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Link to article: http:\/\/en.people.cn\/n3\/2023\/1127\/c90000-20102716.html Chen Binhua, a Chinese mainland spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office stated that the mainland is willing to develop broad space for peaceful reunification of the Taiwan Strait.
