North Korea has successfully launched theirs, but South Korea had to postpone its launch. South Korea has a contract with SpaceX and plans to launch at least 5 spy satellites to gain more knowledge about its neighboring countries. South Korea does not have any spy satellites, and they are currently relying on US satellites to monitor North Korea. North and South Korea have been racing with each other to launch their satellites, and after North Korea successfully launched theirs, the pressure is on South Korea to keep up.

This is important because South Korea currently has no access to observation satellites of its own. They border a country that is very dangerous and could likely attack them, so maintaining a strong surveillance system is critical to South Korea. The launching of North Korea’s spy satellite puts South Korea in a very vulnerable position, as they are already lacking in military equipment. South Korea’s ability to survey North Korea on its own is also beneficial to the United States. The US can focus on allocating resources elsewhere, as opposed to supporting South Korea’s surveillance of North Korea. The US will want to keep a close eye on North Korea, but if their ally – South Korea – already is, then the US can focus elsewhere as well.

This deals with international relations because it deals with international security. North Korea has access to many powerful weapons, and those weapons can do a lot of damage to another country. Therefore, other powers will want to monitor North Korea very closely because North Korea could be very impulsive in their military decisions. That is why countries need to maintain a strong surveillance system and military defense. They need to be prepared for any circumstance, and certain countries need to be on higher alert than others, such as South Korea. Due to their geographical location, South Korea is a hot target for North Korea. That is why they are so focused on launching their satellite.

https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-spy-satellite-delay-north-b928b7b368d777c5d0d92a85f37c665d South and North Korea have both planned to launch military spy satellites.
