They have announced the results of an investigation into whether Taiwan’s restrictions on imports, which is about 2,500 agricultural, industrial and other items from China, have been considered to be trade barriers. The reasons for these conclusions was because Taiwan has been setting up a system that would only allow imports from China if there was a permit on the import. The ministry also said that the procedures had lacked transparency and had no explanations provided to any affected firms. Taiwan believes that the investigation was politically motivated and they find it very unacceptable.

I find this article to be very concerning as China is accusing Taiwan of refusing to go along with the trading process. The allegations could have a serious impact on the kind of independence and sovereignty Taiwan is working to gain. This could also disrupt relations between China and Taiwan and make the Chinese take Taiwan back. This might also concern the United States because of how they support Taiwan in gaining its own sovereignty. With the presidential election in Taiwan scheduled in January, this investigation could be to break down Taiwan’s national security. Taiwan might be making this system in order to ensure that products brought in from China are real and not counterfeit. That way, Taiwan can know if the products imported from China are legal.

In International Relations, we have discussed topics such as stateless nations. Taiwan has been seen as a non-recognized state since it has declared itself to be sovereign but it is missing formal international recognition. We have also talked about the Liberal Theory, where nations expand democratic practices and free trade while protecting human rights. This article also connects with the focus on trade where China and Taiwan are at a crisis in the trading process. Trade helps to promote peace and makes conflict less likely to occur because governments do not want to disrupt any process that brings wealth to each state. But, Taiwan might not be getting any wealth in return. So this must be why they are making the trade barriers.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20231215_24/ According to this article, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce has determined that Taiwan’s restrictions on imports from China have constituted trade barriers.
