While China is denying this claim and stating the Philippines boats made the first aggressive maneuver and after multiple warnings with little to no change in behavior they felt obligated to lash back. While this is a surface-level issue from both sides when the United States head of security weighed in he believed that China was provoking the Philippines to see their responses. Not only because of the slowly growing relationship between the United States and the Philippines but also to see how the United States would react. In my opinion, China is kind of acting like an unruly teenager who is testing the limits of what their parents would allow. I also think that China is trying to find an easy way to get out of all of the islands that are surrounding them that are aligned with the United States. I also think that it will be interesting to see how the United States responds, to me I only see the response going three ways. First, the United States does nothing because they don’t believe that China will press further and when that does occur then we would react. Two, they talk to China and just discourage them from doing that while continuing to support the Phillipans and ensure good relations. Finally, the United States upped its military presence in the area to ensure that the seas stay safe and that China’s navy does not get too much leeway. This could be compared to class on how the United States is trying to become less present as a global power due to the economic strain and us trying to back away from being a world power without losing our most important trade partners. And also is an example of China trying to become a global power. If China can get into the Pacific or Indian Ocean without having to worry about the United States they can expand their sphere of influence. China wants the world to become a Bilateral or multilateral power instead of just the United States. I think it also shows how important the waterways are to gaining power and how a country’s geography can hurt in trying to gain global influence and power.

https://www.france24.com/en/asia-pacific/20231211-philippines-summons-chinese-envoy-after-maritime-confrontations-at-flashpoint-reefs Recently China has been purposefully going into Philippine territory provoking their boats and making aggressive moves toward the Phillipians.
